Visionary leaders have a good understanding of the bigger picture and they communicate using their relevant experience confidently.
A real visionary leader will not only explain where people are going they will also be able to explain why getting there is important and beneficial to the people they are communicating with. What is really impressive about how visionary leaders achieve this is that they have the skills to do this in a way that people can understand what they are saying and actually relate it to how it fits into their own life.
You need the ability to be able to communicate your excitement in a way people can pick up on this.

To become effective in the visionary leadership style you need to be able to confidently present yourself in your area of experience. The ability to work on being able to identify and then relate your messages to the people whom you are communicating is essential.
Empathy really is a key skill needed here if you are going to deliver your message convincingly enough to inspire a change. Different people have different values and sometimes a higher or lower level of experience in the topic you are discussing so your message must be easy for them to relate to with the experience they actually have.

1. Take time to understand what motivates your people
2. Explain why the changes are needed or why they are positive for those involved
3. People need to have the capability to get where you want them to go. Recognise any shortfalls and offer the tools or the support they need
The visionary leadership style has the most strongly positive effect on the environment and the people you interact with, this is because people are given strong direction but then allowed to find the way to “get there” themselves. This combination is incredibly engaging and empowering for anyone involved. Although this the most strongly positive it is not suitable for all situations, there is a requirement to progress through the different styles as the challenges demand.
An example would be when a team or individual has taken a few set backs and needs to resolve any tension, conflict or knock to their confidence for this the visionary leadership style may be too overbearing. Before being ready to move on these emotional needs must be addressed for this the Affiliative leadership style would be far more suitable and effective.
